'Furious 7' Breaks Box Office Record With $143M Domestic Debut and $384M Global Opening
"Furious 7" is speeding to the top of box office with a record-breaking opening. The latest installment of Universal's "Fast and Furious" franchise which marks Paul Walker's final performance in a feature film ruled with approximately $143.6 million bow in the United States and $384 million worldwide.

Directed by James Wan, the film delivers the biggest opening for the "Furious" franchise and the highest domestic launch since 2013's "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire". It beats last year's $95 million opening of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" as the highest April debut in the States and becomes the first film to cross a $100 million debut in the month.

While it's ranked ninth in the U.S. top opening weekend behind "Spider-Man 3" which bowed with $151.1 million in 2007, "Furious 7" is globally the fourth highest debut of all time. It trails behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II" ($483.2 million), "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" ($394.4 million), and "The Avengers" ($392.5 million).

Similar to what happened to "The Dark Knight" which was released after Heath Ledger's sudden death in 2008, moviegoers flocked to watch "Furious 7" in theaters worldwide over the weekend in order to witness one of Walker's final movie roles after his tragic passing in a 2013 fatal car accident.

"This is a bittersweet installment in the franchise," said Phil Contrino, vice president and analyst at "[Walker's] passing made this movie more intriguing for people who hadn't seen some of the installments. It raised awareness and its success is a tribute to him."

It's even predicted to become the first billion-dollar movie for Universal as Contrino said, "This is the next member of the billion-dollar club, and that's a rarefied place to be. This thing is on fire."
